Hobbs State Park celebrated the opening of its $5 Million Visitor Center this past Wednesday, May 27th.

And thanks to the generosity of a Springdale couple, who wish to remain anonymous, Mark Hopkins’  Soaring will be on display in the Visitors Center for the enjoyment of generations to come!

The couple is quite familiar with Mark’s sculpture, and they have also done very significant volunteer work for the new Hobbs Visitor Center. Noting that the Center celebrated the diversity of wildlife in the State Park, but had no display to highlight its perhaps most regal resident, they felt Soaring had to represent the Park’s Bald Eagle population!

Hobbs State Park, at over 12,000 acres, is Arkansas’ largest State Park. It has a rich history, both natural and human. The park is a relatively new addition to the system, with land being principally acquired in 1987, and, until now, being relatively undeveloped. But all that is about to change, with the opening of the Visitor’s Center and ambitious plans for campgrounds, cabins, and additional facilities.

We encourage our friends to visit Hobbs while in the area and look for Soaring while they are there! Hobbs Visitor Center is located about 30 miles southwest of Eureka Springs and 15 miles east of Rogers on Arkansas Hwy. 12. For more information, see their web site here

Dear Friends,
This weekend we will celebrate the creativity of Ken Starbird and Sandy Wythawai Starbird. Join us on Saturday, May 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. to meet this fascinating duo and see some of the creations which have brought joy to so many. New works of the Starbirds’ will be on display from May 22 to the 24th. Their primal images and ceramics are always available at Eureka Thyme!

“Sandy has been birthing Primal Images for over 22 years, first as Sandy Carlson and now as Sandy Wythawai Starbird. The fiber, fabric and found objects figures are the culmination of years of exploration and adventures in sewing, dyeing, weaving, crocheting, basketry, beading and hand building with clay and anything else that sounded like fun. ‘When working on these figures I feel a closeness with the image makers of the past who tried to create work worthy of spiritual presence and through which the answers to life’s mysteries could be found. The images speak of that which is hidden behind the mask. They speak of the connectedness of all things. They touch that Primal creative part of us which remembers that imagination and magic are closely related. When we were young we knew that we created the world anew each moment and with every sunrise. Sometime in childhood we stop trusting what feels right to us and begin accepting what we are told is true about this world. Creative work of any kind provides an opportunity for each willing person to tap into their own intuitive knowing and re-experience that early feeling of BEING magic’ ”

Eureka Thyme News May Festival of the Arts

SHOWS IN THE MONTH OF MAY May 2 – Ed Lohrum May 9 – Peter Wooten May 16 – Maureen Dailey May 23 – The Starbirds	Dear Friends of Eureka Thyme, As most of you know, we are now located in the heart of Eureka Springs, near the Basin Park at the corner of Spring and Center Streets. Although we are in a different location, we are still an outlet for the creations of a wide variety of local artists and craftspeople. Here is a preview of some events happening during the May Fine Arts Festival. Visit Eureka Springs often to catch the scattered joy!!
Smoke Drawing Show Ed Lohrum’s smoke drawings are reminiscent of the earliest known art: that which was left on cave walls by prehistoric man. By first applying a sooty smoke to mat board and then etching a scene in that smoke, Lohrum frees the art from the soot. Join us to meet the magician who creates these wonders from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 2. Most galleries in Eureka Springs will be having shows throughout the month of May, so plan on spending lots of time here!! Art of Luminaria Peter Wooten is a man of many talents! His pure  and perfectly-scented soy and palm candles have become a must-have for the discerning candle connoisseur. The luminaria which he creates have reached such a degree of subtle beauty that we feel he must be celebrated during this month-long art festival  Peter will be explaining his process on May 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. His creations are always available at Eureka Thyme. Dailey Show Maureen Dailey’s unique sculptures feature found objects and glass. She exemplifies the spirit of Eureka with her unbounded bliss as reflected in her creations. Join us from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 16 to meet Maureen at a reception in her honor. The art galleries of Eureka Springs join in welcoming you to various shows and activities. There will be music and art around every corner and up every hill. Enjoy!! The Starbird Collection This show will introduce you to Ken’s exquisite ceramic sculptures and Sandy’s surprising primal images.
